Looking for something to do this weekend? Point Ruston is hosting its first ever Native Art Market on May 2nd from 11:00AM – 4:00PM at the Point Ruston Public Market. The inaugural spring event will feature approximately 20 vendors, as well as the Beaston’s Grill food truck by Joe McCloud (Puyallup).
The event is organized by two local, Native-owned small businesses, Longhouse Fish Company and Salish Rose. We spoke with Anna from Salish Rose, who shared that this opportunity came from a natural collaboration with Longhouse Fish Company, whose permanent location is inside the Waterfront Market, along with a shared recognition that there has never been a Native market at Point Ruston.
A Native Art Market is a natural step when you consider the variety of markets already happening in Tacoma, such as the Tacoma Sunday Market, Tacoma Night Market, Punk Rock Flea Market, and The Market on 6th Ave. Tacoma is well-versed in creating space for artists to sell and showcase their work, and the Native Art Market builds on that by creating space specifically for Indigenous artists to share their culture and stories.
If you would like to see more events like these, showing up matters. Supporting the Native Art Market means supporting local Native artists, local businesses, and continued opportunities for events like this in the community.
