Canoe Way: The Sacred Journey

Witness first hand, through the words and images of native people, as they share the story of the resurgence of the cedar canoe societies – and how it has opened a spiritual path of healing through tradition. Interviews with elders and youth, songs and dances from tribal canoe families, and canoe ceremonies are in this inspiring 54-minute documentary.

We are starting a non-profit which BRIDGE's Native American Elders and Youth. Participating (for our first time) in the Canoe Journey of 2010 has brought great joy to our organization and the Canoe Way is a wonderful educational source full of information about what it means to Natives to participate in the highly honored event. Canoe Way provides insight into the journey from visiting local villages to the host nation and protocol. Furthermore, Cedar Media has included several interviews of Elders with their wisdom on the Canoe Journey. This is a must-see for anyone who wishes to learn more about Native customs and traditions. Thank you Cedar Media for bringing to life our ways!

Tena koutou nga whanaunga, This year i represented my people of Waitaha at the Canoe Paddle In hosted by the Suquamish. What a privilege and an honour to be witness to such a celebration of identity and pride. To see up to 5 generations of your people in complete harmony with each other and committed in such an honourable way to taking back your mana through reviving this tradition is awesome to behold. I have shared this experience with my families back home here. The young ones are enthralled and one day we hope to be able to join with you for we too have memories of being one with you many many generations ago. We still have songs that carry that memory. I think it is important for our young people to live this again with your young people and so bring back to life the ancient sea trails of our ancestors. It is so important for our children and grandchildren to know who they are so they can stand tall in knowing who they are and in doing so bringing back the ancient philosophies of peace and aroha that our ancestors shared so very long ago. This documentary is so so important.
Much mana and aroha to you all who have held the ancient threads of our ancestors and helped in bringing them forward to Te Ao Marama the world of Light and understanding.
Peace Light and Aroha to you all
