Naitve-on-Native Gang Violence: When and How Will it End?
From the News Tribune:
Teens get prison in 2005 killing
"Three teenagers were sent to prison Friday for their roles in a gang-related drive-by shooting that killed Joseph Dillon, who was gunned down as he slept in his uncle's living room in December 2005. "
Naive on Native Gang Violence: When and How Will it End?
Anybody have any ideas?

I'll take the challenge to this Question,
(1) we need to hold the Elders in our tribe responsible ,who first started the gangs in our tribe, and ask them to tell there families to let go of what they taught them and to stop what they are doing
(2) we need to provide a safe enviroment for our youth while they are growing up, bye haveing a place for them to be incase they are getting abused and kicked out on the street's !
(3) we need to have training in jobs and more employment for our youth, bye garnishing councils salary and other high paying salary's to pay for it.
(4) we need to be able to teach our youth who they really are, bye our language, our culture, our spiritual way's, that would give them more power to stand up to what the white world brings, and knot to teach them way's that belong to some place else, if they learn who they are first then they will be strong enough to learn other way's and become stronger against the posibility's of being in a gang
(5) true healling will only come from within, to understand this is to make way and help our way of smokehouse, so our red paint's can bring the healling back to our people that in turn will help our whole community
(6) tribal police needs to stop just taking care of council and there family's need's and to stop letting certain people get away with things becuase there a family of council, this creates the tension and hate towards life that manifest's the hate towards everything in this world, inwhich transfers into the " I don't give a ---" attitude
(7) we need to understand that we are responsible for teaching them what they do, and show them bye example instead of pointing fingers at them blaiming them for it when some of the OLDER people were the ones who starved them, beat them, and kicked them out on the street's to begin with
(8) more programs to support our youth in our tribe as a preventive mesure against gangs and violence
(9) to stop the oppresion that council dictates over us so that we will be able to have a free and equal right to all resources in our tribe to better our people in return will allow things to be more functional in life to deture gangs
(10) better leadership
(11) crack down on the gangs at Chief Leschi before they manifest into more problems as they get older
(12) to listen to our youth with out judgeing them, and offer them help in what they want to do in life
(13) some of the council needs to realize the spirit world is watching and to see they are responsible as the leader's in our tribe
there you go I came up with 13 ideas, just as a start hmm council I chalenge you to some ideas can you meet that bye yourself with out passing it off to someone else

The white man wants us to do just this! Natives killing Natives, this is what he wants, to see us wipe out ourselves, our own race. By the year 2050, how many Natives Americans will there be left? At this pace not much. We have got to teach our children just how special they really are and that takes lots of love. Remember the saying it takes a whole village to raise one child, well even us who are not of the Puyallup Nation want the best for all.Remember we are all Native Americans no matter where we are from or what Native Nation we belong to. To love is with a open heart to all.

maybe instead of pulling out the race card, people should point out how parents should be the ones to ensure that their children are not in gangs. I mean HELLO everyone knows that kids have the tendency to join at a certian age. I have seen little boys as young as 9 or 10 acting like a 40 sreet NGB... Where are the parents???? Why do they not speak to their kids about the dangers of gang activity?
It is very sad to my heart to hear about all the violence that is occurring with our children. I moved away from the lower Eastside to remove my family from the dangers. I also took my child out of Cheif Leschi due to the gang activity there. My son is not allowed to wear certian colors, dress a certian way or interact with other kids who do. I instead focus on positive proactive ways for him to grow and become a positive member of society.
Gangs occur with all races, not just the natives... and i am sorry to say that i just don't agree that the white people are wanting this to happen any more than our native people do. I do agree that we need to come together as a native community and take care of our children as a whole. ONE LOVE

Instead of pulling your kid out of Chief Leschi school you should help out with gang prevention at Chief Leschi. You can't run far, gangs are everywhere. Sorry you don't agree with me, I am just tired of racial hatred thats all over and in every nieghborhood. Remember we weren't the Nation of hatred when Christopher first came here, we welcomed him and his people. But still the white man still hates, and we are second on his list. In his (white race) eyes we will never be his equal.

I am a white person and I don't hate Natives. I went to Pierce College when it was at the Puyallup reservation and I learned a lot about the Native way of life and the struggle to not just exist but to live a full and peaceful life. I started there knowing very little about the Coastal Salish, but as I listened I learned. I met wonderful people and still keep in touch to this day. Please don't lump all of us "whites" into one category and assume that we all "hate" Native Americans, because I for one, do not.
As for the gang problem in Chief Leschi, any time there is oppression, anger, drugs and alcohol, family problems and a marginalized society of people, there will be others who try to recruit kids into their "way of life", especially if the kids' family is having problems or issues. This is true anywhere you go, not just at Chief Leschi. Good luck to all who are getting involved and wanting to make a difference! I'm on your side...

Just because somebody wheres red they are consider an Blood well I have news for you all. back in the days when we fought for our tribal rights we wore red rags, blue rags, brown rags and all the colors of people who struggle with us and helped for are rights to voice out what you want for your community and we voted to make an difference and we got an School and because somebody wears red you are consider a gang member.back in the days non-Indians called Indians red man and yellow-man was Japanese and they are all different too. and when we wear our coastal colors black and red are we still consider a gang member. We need Native teacher to teach why we have what have because of the struggles of America we didn't invite the original boat people. they came to destroy our being but realize they were all wrong and how would it be if nobody seen the other but listen to what they had to say with out put downs. we are all hurt and cry and bleed we are all unique but lets try to understand one another by encouraging one another. Every where there is problems and the same issues. if this your community make change or pray for us so we can make a difference. Gangs need a turn around and become team leaders for football, sports great attorneys, Doctors. future council members. State Senator. leave the rez and learn what the non-Indians have and bring it back use your education you will be amazed on what you can do hear what Romona Bennett did she and others birth a nation. imagine that. Puyallup Nation its all about the community and our relations. May you all be blessed. Our Father thank you for letting me e-mail this for the people to read. I pray for understanding in the community and ask forgiveness if any one was offended you are the one that will restore and heal the hearts of broken families. and I pray for us to be mindful each other. And one day they will all come together to get a better understanding of who you are and why you died for all of us.
Amen and Amen may your life be filled with Love and joy, kindness, gentleness, faith, meekness.
Always, LKG

while you have a point about the tribal elders being responsible for tribal youth, you cannot lay all the responsibility to the older people. the parents of young families must teach their children the correct way to live. it is your responsibility to teach your children and my responsibility to teach mine. no excuses. if you drink, if you drug, if you abuse your spouse or children, that is what your children will learn. tribal council can't save them, smokehouse can't do what a good parental example can do for them. pushing that responsibility onto someone or something else is just a cop-out for people who don't want to put in their own work as parents. if you didn't have parents who knew how to parent you, learn how to be a parent yourself. look for good examples within indian country, use good sense, take classes, know what's going on with your kids. don't let your kids run around with nothing to do but get into trouble. don't let them hang out with the gangsters. make sure you have something for them to do, and do it with them.
Chief Leschi has problems with gangs because tribal members don't want the school to hold their kids accountable. they want the kids to remain in school and get their diplomas regardless of the trouble they cause or the danger they put other students in. if the school tried to put a troublemaker out, the parent will threaten to go to tribal council and have a big fit, instead of wanting the school to hold their child accountable for their behavior. that may not change. that's why we have gangs in chief leschi school.
tribal members would rather piss and moan about how bad things are than try to do something to change them for the better. how do i know this? think about it, do you really think that tribal council could or would be able to stand in the way of change if tribal members would unite and really work for positive change? no, they would have no choice but to get on board with the program.
it is good and fine to talk about spirituality and i take no issue with the fact that smokehouse is a powerful thing, I do know that there have been red-face dancers from puyallup much more recently that 200 years, in the last 2 generations, in fact, not at tulalip, perhaps. i am sorry that so many have lost their knowledge of family history. be open and ask questions. there are those who know, but they don't seek the spotlight. remember, you don't have to ask the creator for things that you can do yourself, but you can ask him for the strength to do it. peace to all

well first of all, yae smoke house can do what parents can't...infact I am living prof of that, I have a hospital record at childreans orthipedic hospital for all kinds of injuries stimming from fractured bones to concutions to laserations to bruising from child abuse from the ages of 8 years old to 15 years old when I was a child from my Dad as he made everyone else think I was disrepectfull and needed a talking to everytime a elder came to visit our house( WHAT A JOKE). then my Mother would kick me out on the streets from the age of 10 years old until 14, there was no where to turn no one at all I can remeber sleeping alone under a bench in a park on Christmas eve while it was snowing woundering dose anyone in my tribe care? IF THERE WAS A PROGRAM THAT TRIBAL COUNCIL ACTUALLY WORKED ON FOR YOUTH HOUSING AND SAFTEY maybe I would have knot shead so many tears alone on the streets while they were cozy buy a fire in a home they either had for free or was able to use embezlement money for... it was the smokehouse that took me in and gave me a family that taught me Love and what a family really is. You must be kinda ignorant to the inner workings of a smokehouse becuase if you knew what gose on in there you would understand that you gain spiritual parents in there and that is all I will say on that.
in our Puyallup tribe I am the oldest red paint dancer, and the first in our tribe for over 200 plus years since the gov. burnt them down, I know for some people it's a hard thing to swallow after you chew on that for a while and understand what that all intails but it is true, yae we have alot of people," wanabe Puyallup's" now becuase of the money and I'm pretty sure everyone in the Pugeot sound can claim there very distant relaitive was part Puyallup to get the percapita's...but if you know our history you would know some of the original families from here ,and would be able to understand a little more then you think you do.
yes I was put in Tulalip under Kenny Moses Sr. at the age of 15 which was 17 years ago..I was part of a spiritual awakening that brings back what our people lost , and have been trained in that manner for it from many Smoke houses up in down this coast sorry if that ofends you or rains on your parade. I just can't understand how you can condem and show respect to smoke house all in the same sentence though.. now that's kinda strange if you ask me. there is no spotlight to be held for this work, the change is happening and you can help it or get in the way, in which will be removed to clear the path. The truth is the truth and I do understand for some it's a hard piece to swallow when you are more concerned with power then your people's well being but that has been the illness our people have had since the time of the smokehouse burnings in the 1800's
there are many ways to help our people and to condem one is to condem all, there is a responsibility our council has I read there B-S letters for candinacy and have seen knothing

thankyou for the support, I really thank you for those words, it feels real good to have people who say good things like that....I will like for it to be none publicly that if elected I will insure that all native people will also be given help above non Natives...but Puyallup Members will have authority in my eyes on all resources.....first , such as jobs and health care.... so you see I Love all my native people,,,,and will fight for them as well,,,to learn how to support each other and build stronger relations with the other tribes. With 3 years of salary's combind I will have 750,000$ if I'm elected, can you imagine what I could do with that money? buy returning it back to the people.......
O.C.M
thankx again....

We can point the finger at racism, school officials or anyone we feel we need to, but in the end, look in the mirror, are you slinging hateful words, blaming others, while nothing is being done. Our children need us, regardless of their color, origin...they are children. This is why they have hate in their hearts, because we show them hatred when we talk of racism. it is a learned behavior.

It's not racism it fact, they are still trying to take everything including our race, see how many full bloods are still around huh, not much.
Reply to this
I agree, they (government) are trying to take everything, but to come to the conclusion that it is only Indians they are taking from is not looking at the full spectrum, they will take from everyone, and anyone.
As far as full bloods, no you are right, the blood line gets thinner, but that is the choice of the Indians/person.
