There are many stories of how tribal members working for the tribe are harrassed and denied promotions, while others abuse their privilidge and power. If you know of this happening, please respond in the comments section below.

One reader wrote to PuyallupTribalNews.com and is circulating a petition:

Tribal Government comes from the concept of tribal sovereignty which is ultimately vested in the people, this is how the tribal members decide the type of government they choose to have. Tribal citizens can and should participate in tribal government by being informed, attending general membership meetings, taking part in discussions of tribal issues, voting, holding office, serving on committees, etc. It is important to be involved in tribal government for the protection of tribal rights, improve the quality of life on the reservation, and to prevent officials from abusing their power. When Indian Civil Rights are violated, who is accountable? When tribal rights are violated, where do you go for due process? When the tribal government exists for the benefit of a selected few and not for the Puyallup Tribe as a whole, the power of the people have all Tribal Rights to set forth as many detailed ordinances as seen fit for the protection and enforcement of our Puyallup Tribal Rights and Indian Civil Rights. The responsibility of the whole tribe relies on all of us to ensure equality and fairness for our youth, elders, and tomorrows people.

How did we as a people become divided? Fighting and standing together as one in the past for our fishing rights, our rights as a people, Cushman building takeover, etc., we are now battling our own people. We no longer stand united to fight for injustices towards our Tribe as a whole. Instead we are divided with past and current coalition groups trying to defend ourselves from our own people.

Native Preference Enforcement Act Petition

Please sign this petition for referendum to protect your employment rights and enforce at all times tribal preference in regards to promotion opportunities. These are tribal and federal laws and yet are violated time and time again. It's up to us to pass referendums like this to protect our own tribal rights when tribal government chooses not to. If you have family, friends, and other concerned tribal members who wish to sign call 253-359-7584.

This is all true, and the ones who fight for the injustices are "blacklisted" the ones who try to improve the communication between the elected leaders are called "troublemakers" the ones who acturally were involved in the treaty fishing wars are ignored!!
I would like to see your petition. I think what divided the tribe is greed and jealousy. If we could come together to protect the welfare of our future and think along those lines and overcome all the negativity we could probably be a strong tribe again. But it will take alot of healing. we are used to being fed a line of political BS, and we are used to certain council members blaming the other councilmember, but remember they are all in that room when decisions are being made, you just need to check the minutes and if they tell you they said something make them should you the minutes.

A huge THANK-YOU to this website and it's makers for this much needed uncensored informational source. This was way easier to put this petition on this website than the Tribal Newspaper. Can't even get a hold of the editor for news i would like to add and share with the tribal community. This petition was started because of what it states, protecting our tribal employment rights, at the hiring process, promotion opportunities, and including terminations, making sure all tribal and federal laws were enforced and fair decisions made. But as I started this petition, I'm reminded of how we can no longer get addresses for all tribal members to get this type of information out to them and also a tribal newspaper who doesn't make it easy to also put this type of information in the paper. How am I expected to give our membership a chance to view this petition information if I'm denied sources that our tribal government easily has access to for their own announcements, news, etc. For example, we all received a mailer for a vote yes/no on the 2 kid's in Oklahoma, if we want to hire a attorney in OK for that issue. The council used enrollment to get the mailers out to us. I have important information regarding our tribal employment rights that i would like to share, but in order for me to get a voting mailer, i had to draw up a petition referendum, submit it and have it signed by election committee, and now have to to collect over 600 valid signatures to get it on a voting mailout, we should have fair access to all sources. Yes people send out negative information, but these are not positive times we are living in right now. The truth has to be spoke and sometimes it hurts, but that too is under our civil and tribal rights, FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND PRESS! In the news tribune, and other newspapers, everyone reports the negative and positive because that's what's happening in the environment whether it's city or tribal. It's no surprise a website like this came about for just those reasons. Thanks for letting me say my opinions and if anyone wants to sign the petition, let me know, if it doesn't pass this time, we'll have to try again until it does! Email lmd007@comcast.net or phone 253-359-7584. With all my respect, Aron Dillon Sr.

For those tribal memebers who believe that they are being overlooked for promotions ect., maybe they should start with leading by example. We should be proud to be working for our tribe weather it is at the admin building or at the casino. We have too many members who expect to be treated a certian way or get special treatment just because of their status in the tribe or the fact that they are a tribal member. Although, I fully believe that we are the ones who should be running the show, there has been too few member who even are able to step up to the plate and handle business correctly so that our tribe can grow and become a powerhouse. I myself come to work and do my job everyday and feel that I represent the tribe in a positive light, but I see the other side way too much. We as a tribe need to get our minds right and be strong enough to earn promotions ect. Hard work pays off to those who earn it. We need to stop wining about the little things and stand strong.

To concerned tribalmember...yes i went door to door and will continue to, the ones where i lived in the Northeast housing and on Columbia housing houses, are very supportive and share their stories of wrong doings. They have signed willingly, others who are in admin and at the casino are very reluctant to sign, which proves there is a threatened working environment since reluctant signers don't want their names connected to any forms of change that doesn't come directly from management or council. This is a step forward into the future for employment fairness for all tribal entities within the tribe. We already have Tribal and Native preference laws, but my concern and experience is these laws are not enacted at all times, when that's what they are here for. This petition if set forth and enacted will create a seperate appeals board who actually investigates into ones complaints to check and see if these laws were not broken and employment decisions are valid. Right now, if one feels wrongful employment decisions are made, it goes through upper management, HR, and then council. Upper mgt. & HR, make the decisions and council usually backs them up. That's been my own experience and got denied for promotion oppurtunites over non tribal members, because of the buddy system. The petition ends November 20th 2006, if you want to sign call me and i can bring the petition and answer any more of your questions. Thanks for your comments, respectfully, Aron Dillon SR.

I would like to respond to Puyallupgirl's comment, I too work hard and have worked very hard since the age of 16 starting out in janitorial work for the tribe, and starting in the bingo hall and casino within facilities dept (scrubbing toilets and cleaning up after everyone). These jobs fed my family and paid the rent for many years, I had a hard time trying to move up within the casino but over these past years i have been denied again and again to finally gain experience within many casino departments. I have worked hard the past 2 years in my current job as a relief shift manager, and have had the oppurtunity to meet many tribal members and find relatives, but many of them have had the same experience being passed up from promotions, because dept. managers want certain favorites in these positions, not hard working individuals like myself. Out of frustation i have seen many tribal members take the unfairness and continue to work, Which i commend them since i work with many of them. Other tribal members get frustrated and quit, and i'm sure this just doesn't happen in the casino. I agree with working hard and others should also, but when their are the members who abuse their jobs and easily get promoted, this is why we have a system of nepotism when these people are protected by upper management and council either because they are family members or close friends. This petition can't stop every form of nepotism but can make a dent and hold people accountable for unfair decisions made in regards to that particular tribal member. This petition doesn't catapault all tribal members into promotion positions, it only investigates complaints if one feels unfair decisions were made regarding their job. In the end of the petition it states if the decisions made are valid after investigating, then an explanation will be given of why it's valid. It's only a fair process and that's what i want for our tribe as a whole, a fair shot at jobs, promotions, and fair terminations. Once tribal members obtain these jobs, it's their choice how they treat their job, if they work hard i'm sure they'll go far, if they slack, i'm sure that's the consequences they choose to take. Again this petition is for a fair chance for everyone, which everyone deserves. I'm very glad and commend Puyallupgirl is working hard and keep up the good work! Respectfully yours, Aron Dillon SR.

Well; I have watched for YEARS the political jobs that have been made in the name of the council. years people have worked at the tribe and to watch someone walk in and take a job who isn't even tribal just ticks me off. to hire someone for another person's advancement is wrong and unethical. many of our tribal members have college education but only a selected few are given jobs. we have people in the tribe running programs that are not educated in administration, or any other program. that is why the tribe is always paying millions of dollars back to federal program BECAUSE OF MISMANAGEMENT.
*I agree with you Aaron and I hope that you get the signatures. but the way the tribal council is doing things is to make sure you fail.
Sure, those of us who throw our names out there saying things are usually the ones who are critized. but where are the other tribal members who come to us and complain don't you have a voice, are you just sitting back and waiting and denouncing the ones who have important issues with what is going on with our tribe. Just keep on trucking and working and you will see that the only way you advance in the tribe is if you are politically aligned with the right people.

I also hear that we are still our of complicance with other departments, so when do we get inot complicance, who is the complicance officer, apparently we don't have a very strong one. And that is what the tribe needs more than ever a STRONG complicance office.

My cousin, a Native American, has been the victim of misdiagnosis, neglect, and overmedication by doctors at The Puyallup Tribal Health Facility.

It is hard to believe that corruption on this level is allowed to exist. I am drafting a letter to register a complaint with the proper authorities. After reading postings at this website I have discovered that I can't even get the addresses of the seven Puyallup Tribal Council members.

Obviously these councilmembers are hiding out for a reason. What are they trying to cover-up? Shouldn't the members, as elected officials, be available to the tribal members they represent?

My cousin doesn't want to be labled as a troublemaker. He just wants the care and benefits to which he is entitled. He is a very sick man; the Puyallup Tribal Health Facility has contributed to his suffering.
Recently he had heart bypass surgery and had to go through detox while in the hospital because he was on 31 different prescription medications. He has been forced to find doctors outside the facility in order to get proper medical care.

His Tribal caseworker will not return his phonecalls, because he has gotten care from doctors outside the facility. Shouldn't she continue to support him, since he is merely trying to get his health back?

Has anyone had similar problems with the clinic?
